Declan Kyle Dawson was the only biological child born to nineteen year old Ivy League college student, Elyssa Dawson. Elyssa was the Valedictorian in high school and won a full tuition scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania to study Vetinary Medicine. In her Freshman year of college, she and her group of close friends pitched in to go to New Orleans for Spring Break. Elyssa couldn't have had a more privileged and happy life but it all came crashing down during that weekend in NOLA.

One night, after a few too many drinks, Elyssa was accosted the dancefloor of a club and dragged into the bathroom where she was viciously raped and left for dead after he stabbed her in the groin to incapacitate her. He was a serial rapist and too depraved to rely on roofies. He liked to watch his victims suffering in pain and screaming for help when he raped them. If her friends hadn't come to find her when they did, she would have bled to death in the bathroom stall. She was rushed to hospital and a rape kit performed but at the time, the DNA didn't return any matches. Elyssa always thought she was pro-choice but when she discovered she was pregnant as a result of the rape, she wasn't able to go through with an abortion. Along with the trauma of the violent sexual assault, the pregnancy proved to be too much for her. She became addicted to prescription painkillers that she was prescribed long-term for the damaged tendon in her groin. She made the decision to give the baby up for adoption. When he was born, she couldn't even look at him, let alone hold him. She never went back to college. She never managed to recover enough to achieve anything.

Declan was adopted by a couple who had been in the adoption system for a long time and faced numerous failed IVF attempts. But as soon as his adoption was complete, his adoptive mother discovered she was pregnant with triplets when their last shot at IVF took. It wasn't that he ever had a bad life with them, it was just distant. He always felt like the black sheep (it didn't help that he was the only dark-haired, dark-eyed family member in a sea of blonde and green eyes). His three sisters had nothing in common with him and he always had a sense his parents didn't love him as much as they did their three biological daughters. Yet, he only found out he was adopted when he was fifteen and his biological mother found him because she wanted to meet him.

Declan's adoptive parents weren't going to tell him about the adoption or that Elyssa was searching for him. They thought they were protecting him but deep down, it was really because they didn't know how to tell him he was the product of a rape. They knew if he met Elyssa, she would tell him the truth. The decision was soon taken out of their hands when Declan came home sick from football practice and overheard his mother on a phone call with her best friend where he heard enough to learn he was adopted and his biological mother was looking for him and they didn't want to tell him the truth. Declan didn't take the news well. He ran away and got so drunk at a rave party, he fell down a flight of stairs. It scared his parents and guilted them into telling him the truth and because he was almost 16 years old, decided to give him the option of whether he wanted to meet his biological mother or not, but warned him her story would be traumatic for him.

He wanted to meet her. When he learnt he was adopted, a lot of things began to make sense for him and he wanted to hear where he came from. Declan only knew his biological mother for a year. She told him what happened to her and that she fell pregnant when she was raped. She knew the rapist had dark hair and blue eyes and his hair was never something she seemed to be able to budge from. It reminded her a lot of her attacker but she was happy to see he was a healthy and sweet kid, albeit unremarkable. He valued morals and had an interest in photography, wanting to do a degree in Fine Arts when he finished high school. He enjoyed being active and playing sports but mostly only for fun. He had some skill in track and field and took up hobbies in fencing and javelin. Nothing of who Declan was seemed to match her own life and she incorrectly assumed this meant he was more like his biological father, her rapist.

They spent a lot of time together in that year and got to know each other. Declan enjoyed spending time with her when she flew into his hometown, Denver, Colorado. Even when she couldn't visit, they kept in touch online by emails. She would never let him go to visit her, telling him that her family wouldn't understand. He would eventually discover that her family never knew he existed. After he turned 16, he asked her if he could go live with her. His relationship with his family broke down once Elyssa was in his life and his sisters had become particularly bitchy to him once he knew he was adopted, making snide remarks about not being related to them and treating him like shit. Elyssa told him she would think about it and in the middle of their lunch, went to the ladies room and cut her wrists, taking her own life.

Declan didn't cope and in an attempt to escape seeing her dead in a pool of blood, he turned to alcohol and fell in with an unsavoury crowd. Soon, that evolved to drug use which turned hard when he started to realise he was gay. He tried coming out to his family at a dinner one night and his parents didn't seem to know what to do with the information or how to respond. His sisters just laughed and began a tirade of homophobic mocking. He couldn't handle it and when he ran away from home this time, he never went back. He got a fake ID and scored a job in a bar in South Dakota where he hitchhiked to. He moved into a rented room with a little old lady called Doris and her maltese terrier, Barry (she was a huge Flash fan). Doris became like a grandmother to him and encouraged him to get his GED and chase his dream of becoming a professional photographer. Which is what he did, but could never shake the addiction issues. It came and went in waves, where he would get clean for awhile but soon fall off the wagon. It led to him getting high on Ice one night and participating in a bareback threesome.

Three days later in a free clinic, Declan's Rapid HIV test showed Positive. Three months later, he was officially diagnosed as HIV Positive. It was a terrible shock and although he was counselled through the ordeal and opened up to Doris about what happened, it was a reality check and it led to him wanting to hunt down Elyssa's rapist - his biologically father - and get justice for her. Doris tapped into her savings and told him to hire a Private Investigator that her sister's husband's son once used and was apparently one of the best in the business of hunting down suspected perpetrators of violent crimes... one, Clint Chevalier. But after sending through all the information to the guy, all he got back was a one-line email telling him to drop the case and never heard from him again.

Declan got cold feet and felt like it was a sign to not bother his hunt. It was only after he got received a letter forwarded on from his adoptive mother that was post-marked months ago when Elyssa paid for a DNA test to prove she was his biological mother. The letter advised him that there was a match identifying his biological father, as a deceased Jérôme Chevalier, an identified serial rapist and murderer who had been murdered by his wife, a victim of domestic violence. Knowing the name couldn't just be a coincidence, Declan packed up his life and moved to New York where Clint was based but trying to track Clint down proved impossible once he got there, until he saw a news report on the TV of the bar he was working in that would change his life forever...
